During my years working on assignment for an international media organisation, I had the opportunity to cover political events across Malaysia. Those assignments brought me into the presence of many political leaders, but few left an impression as lasting as Karpal Singh.
As a lawyer, parliamentarian, and one of Malaysia’s most prominent public figures, Karpal Singh was widely recognised for his unwavering commitment to justice, constitutional principles, and public service. Whether speaking in Parliament, addressing a public gathering, or meeting ordinary citizens, he carried the same unmistakable conviction.
This series brings together photographs I made in different places and at different moments before his passing in 2014. Some were taken as he stood before large crowds, delivering speeches with remarkable clarity and determination. Others capture quieter moments that reveal the presence of a man whose influence extended well beyond the podium.
As a photojournalist, my responsibility was never to shape the story, but to witness it.
Looking back at these images today, I see more than a political figure. I see a chapter of Malaysia’s history, recorded through moments that can never be repeated.
Photographs preserve more than appearances. They preserve voices, memories, and the spirit of a particular time. This series is my remembrance of one such voice—one that continues to echo long after it has fallen silent.
