Eddie Chang
A Photographic Journey Through Life, Culture and Time
Born in 1976 in Batu Pahat, a small coastal town in Malaysia, Eddie Chang grew up surrounded by a diverse cultural landscape where traditions, communities, and everyday stories became part of his visual memory.
Batu Pahat has long been associated with a strong photography culture, producing many respected salon photographers. It was in this environment that Eddie developed his fascination with photography during his secondary school years — an era when images were captured on film, and every frame carried anticipation and meaning.
His first single-lens reflex camera was a Yashica 2000. Over the years, he explored the world of film photography through classic Nikon cameras, including the Nikon FG, Nikon FM, and Nikon F3. During his student years, photography was not only a passion but also a way to support himself. He worked as a wedding photographer, using every opportunity to deepen his understanding of light, composition, and human emotions.
As his professional career became increasingly demanding, photography gradually took a back seat. However, the emergence of digital photography reignited his passion. In the early days of digital SLR photography, he acquired his first digital camera, the Olympus E-500, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his photographic journey.
In 2005, Eddie made a significant decision to leave his corporate management career and fully dedicate himself to photography as a professional photographer.
Starting from wedding photography, he gradually expanded his expertise into commercial photography and eventually established Palm Image. Through years of dedication and creative exploration, Palm Image became recognised for producing high-quality commercial imagery, specialising in areas such as luxury furniture, sports, corporate events, and news-related assignments for both local and international clients.
His photographic vision extended beyond commercial work. Since 2008, his street photography and documentary-style images began receiving wider recognition. His ability to capture authentic human moments, cultural expressions, and everyday stories attracted the attention of Canon Malaysia, who appointed him as a photography instructor to conduct photography courses for Canon users throughout Malaysia until 2017.
Throughout his journey, Eddie has worked with a wide range of Canon camera systems, from the EOS 20D and EOS 60D series to professional bodies including the EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 5D Mark IV, EOS-1Ds, and EOS-1D X. Among the many lenses he has used, prime lenses such as the 50mm and 85mm remain his favourites — tools that allow him to observe the world with simplicity, intimacy, and authenticity.
Beyond commercial photography, Eddie has always been deeply connected to documentary and cultural photography. He has guided photography enthusiasts through visual journeys across Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Siem Reap, Angkor Wat, Mount Bromo, Bali, Vietnam, and other destinations, helping students discover the stories behind people, places, and cultures.
His photographic approach has always been rooted in observation — walking through local markets, parks, streets, and communities with a camera in hand, capturing the quiet moments of everyday life that are often overlooked.
Today, Eddie no longer pursues photography as a profession. Instead, Palm Image | The Eddie Chang Archive serves as a personal collection of his photographic journey — a space to preserve decades of images, reflections, and memories.
For Eddie, photography has never only been about cameras or techniques. It is about seeing, feeling, and remembering.
Through light and time, every photograph becomes a fragment of life — a story waiting to be rediscovered.
