The idea of photographing Master Tan first came to me in 2019.
Based in Muar, Malaysia, he runs a guitar workshop called Torres Guitar, where he teaches classical guitar and dedicates his time to the art of guitar restoration and repair. Beyond being an experienced craftsman, he is someone who carries a deep passion and respect for the instrument.
A guitar refined by his hands always feels different. The tone becomes richer, the response becomes more natural, and the instrument feels more connected to the player. Several of my own guitars have gone through his careful adjustments, and each one returned with a renewed character and playability.
Years passed, and it was not until 2026, when I was preparing for my guitar concert and invited Master Tan as the finale guest performer, that I finally had the opportunity to photograph him in his own workshop. The portraits were initially created for promotional materials, but the session gradually became something more personal — a visual documentation of a craftsman devoted to his lifelong passion.
When he talks about guitars and music, his words flow effortlessly. Throughout the session, I saw the dedication and purpose reflected in his eyes — a devotion not only to the instrument itself, but also to the music and the people who play it.
Through this series, I chose the simplicity of black and white photography to reveal what I saw beyond the surface: the soul, passion, and quiet dedication of a man who has spent his life accompanying others through music.
