Some photographic journeys never truly come to an end.
Nearly twenty years ago, I began volunteering as the photographer for the Chinese Orchestra and String Orchestra of Chinese High School in Batu Pahat, documenting their annual school performances. What started as a simple act of support gradually became a tradition, allowing me to witness generations of students grow through music.
Time has a beautiful way of bringing stories full circle.
Years later, my own daughter became a member of the orchestra, performing as an erhu player and eventually serving as its conductor. In December 2025, the orchestra presented its public concert, Tide of REN, at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac), making the occasion even more meaningful for me.
It was a privilege to return once again as the official photographer, preserving not only the performances, but also the dedication, friendship, and countless hours of practice shared by the students and teachers behind every note.
As I looked through the viewfinder, I realised I was not simply documenting a concert. I was witnessing the passage of time — where memories, music, and generations quietly came together on the same stage.
This series is a tribute to everyone who has been part of that journey, and to the enduring spirit of Hua Ren’s Chinese Orchestra.
